✧ When Your Old Life No Longer Fits ✧
Outgrowing isn’t rejection. Sometimes, it’s simply growth.
There are moments in life when nothing is technically wrong. You haven’t necessarily had a dramatic ending, there hasn’t been a huge argument and nobody has slammed a door behind them. And yet something just feels… different.
The things that once excited you don’t quite light you up anymore. Places that once felt comfortable begin to feel a little cramped, conversations you’ve had a hundred times suddenly feel exhausting, and dreams you once desperately wanted don’t seem to belong to you anymore. Sometimes the strangest part is looking back at who you used to be and feeling like you barely recognise that person anymore.
That can be frightening, because our first instinct is often to wonder what’s wrong. Why don’t I want this anymore? Why doesn’t this make me happy anymore? Why have I changed?
But maybe you’re not lost.
Maybe you’ve simply outgrown something.
✧ Growth Can Feel Like Grief
We talk about growth as though it should always feel wonderful, like one morning you’re going to wake up transformed, throw open the curtains and dramatically announce, “I have evolved!” Unfortunately, life rarely provides the appropriate cinematic soundtrack.
Sometimes growth feels confusing. Sometimes it feels lonely, and sometimes it looks suspiciously like everything falling apart. Becoming someone new often means saying goodbye to things that belonged to an older version of you, and even when something is no longer right for us, we can still grieve it.
You can miss something and know you shouldn’t return to it. You can care deeply about someone and recognise that your paths are changing. You can appreciate who you once were without wanting to become that person again.
Those things can all exist together.
✧ You Don’t Have to Hate Something to Leave It Behind
I think sometimes we wait for permission to move on. We think something needs to become unbearable before we’re allowed to leave it. A friendship needs to become toxic, a job needs to become awful, a relationship needs to completely break down or a dream needs to fail.
But sometimes there isn’t a villain. Sometimes something simply doesn’t fit anymore.
Think about clothes you’ve loved over the years. You don’t stand in front of an old outfit screaming, “YOU HAVE BETRAYED ME.” Well… hopefully not. 😂 You just realise it doesn’t fit anymore. You don’t have to hate it or regret ever wearing it. Something simply changed.
Life can be like that too.
Something can have been completely right for you once and still not be right for you now. Moving forward doesn’t erase what it meant to you at the time.
✧ Pay Attention to What Feels Too Small
Growth has a funny way of announcing itself through discomfort. You start wanting different conversations, different surroundings and different experiences. Your boundaries change and you become less willing to abandon yourself just to keep everybody else comfortable. Things you once tolerated begin irritating the absolute life out of you.
Then you find yourself wondering, “Why am I suddenly like this?”
Maybe you’re not suddenly anything. Maybe you’ve been changing quietly for a long time and you’ve only just noticed.
A seed doesn’t become a flower the moment we see the petals. Most of the transformation happened underground.
Maybe some of your growth has been happening underground too.
✧ You Are Allowed to Change Your Mind
This one matters. You are allowed to change your mind about what you want your life to look like. You are allowed to discover that the dream you had five years ago isn’t your dream anymore. You’re allowed to change direction, become softer or louder, quieter or braver. You’re allowed to become more protective of your peace, more adventurous and more selective about where your energy goes.
Changing doesn’t mean the person you were before was fake or that everything you once wanted was wrong. That version of you was exactly who you needed to be at that point in your life.
They made choices with the knowledge they had. They survived things you might look back on differently now. They learned lessons, made mistakes, loved people, changed their mind and somehow got you all the way here.
You don’t need to be embarrassed by an old version of yourself simply because you’ve grown beyond them.
Honour who you were. Make space for who you’re becoming.
✧ Not Everything You Lose Is a Loss
There will be things that cannot follow you into every version of your life, and when they fall away your instinct might be to grab hold of them because familiar feels safe, even when familiar isn’t particularly good for us.
But an empty space isn’t always evidence that something has gone wrong. Sometimes space appears because something new needs somewhere to land.
The difficult part is that you don’t necessarily know what that something is yet. We want the replacement before we’re willing to release the old thing. We want proof. “Okay universe, I’ll let go of this, but kindly show me exactly what I’m getting instead.” 😂
Unfortunately, that’s rarely how it works.
Sometimes you have to create the space first and trust yourself enough to sit with it being empty for a while. Not every empty space needs to be immediately filled. Sometimes it gives you room to breathe, think and work out what you actually want next.
✧ You Don’t Owe Anyone an Older Version of You
Sometimes other people notice our growth before we’re comfortable acknowledging it ourselves. You might hear things like, “You’ve changed,” as though changing is automatically something negative.
Of course you’ve changed.
Life changes us.
The things we’ve experienced change us. The people we’ve met change us. Heartbreak changes us. Joy changes us. Grief changes us. Healing changes us. Learning more about ourselves changes us.
You aren’t supposed to remain exactly the same person forever just so everyone around you knows what to expect.
That doesn’t mean becoming uncaring or forgetting the people who have been part of your story. It simply means recognising that you are allowed to keep becoming.
And the people who genuinely love you shouldn’t require you to shrink back into an older version of yourself just because that version was more familiar to them.
✧ Becoming
Maybe you’re somewhere in that strange middle place right now. You’re no longer entirely who you were, but you’re not quite sure who you’re becoming either.
You don’t need to rush through that. You don’t need to have the next ten years mapped out and you don’t even need to know the next ten steps. Sometimes you only need to know the next one.
Perhaps today’s step is simply admitting:
“This doesn’t fit me anymore.”
Not with anger or bitterness, and not because the past was meaningless. It mattered. It was part of your story. But you’re allowed to reach the end of a chapter without wishing you’d never read it.
You’re allowed to appreciate what something gave you and still put it down.
You’re allowed to love memories without trying to recreate them.
You’re allowed to change your dreams.
You’re allowed to choose differently now.
So if things feel different lately, if you’re craving more quiet, your priorities are changing, you’re protecting your energy differently or old versions of your life are beginning to feel unfamiliar, don’t immediately assume you’ve lost your way.
You might finally be finding it.
✧ Nova Reflection
Take a quiet moment today and ask yourself: What am I holding onto simply because it once belonged to me?
Maybe it’s a belief about yourself. Maybe it’s a habit, a dream, an expectation, a relationship with something or someone, or simply an idea of what you thought your life was supposed to look like by now.
Then ask yourself something a little harder:
What might become possible if I gave myself permission to outgrow it?
You don’t need to make some enormous, dramatic decision today. You don’t have to cut everybody off, throw your belongings into a suitcase and disappear into the mountains by teatime. 😂
Just notice what comes up.
Notice what feels expansive and what feels restrictive. Notice what brings you peace and what constantly asks you to make yourself smaller. Notice which parts of your life still feel like home and which ones you’re only holding onto because they’ve been there for a long time.
You don’t need all the answers today.
Sometimes noticing is enough.
Sometimes that’s where the next chapter begins.
✧ Today’s Affirmation ✧
I release what I have outgrown and make space for who I am becoming.
