19 August 2026If Your Soul Isn’t Dancing, Change the Song
Somewhere along the way, I think a lot of us forgot that life is actually supposed to be enjoyed. We got so busy being responsible, sensible, productive and doing all the things we’re supposed to do that we stopped asking ourselves a really simple question: am I actually enjoying any of this?
When we were younger, we didn’t need a reason to do something other than it looks fun. We danced badly, dressed up, made things, imagined entire worlds, changed our minds every five minutes and became obsessed with completely random things just because they made us happy. We weren’t thinking about whether it was productive or whether somebody else would think it was weird. We just fucking did it.
Then adulthood happened, and somehow everything became so serious.
We start wearing things because they’re appropriate rather than because they make us feel amazing. We stop trying things because we might look stupid. We convince ourselves we’re too old for things we used to love. We get stuck in routines because they’re familiar, even when they’re boring the absolute tits off us.
And I think sometimes that feeling of being stuck doesn’t mean you need to completely change your life. Maybe you just need to change the bloody song.
Do something different simply because you can. Wear the outfit you keep telling yourself you need an occasion for. Put music on while you’re making dinner and dance around the kitchen. Learn something completely random. Rearrange a room. Dye your hair. Start painting even if you’re terrible at it. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Read about something that fascinates you. Be curious again.
Basically, give yourself permission to be a person rather than a never-ending fucking to-do list.
I’ve realised recently how much I love discovering new things about myself. There are things I’m interested in now that an older version of me probably wouldn’t have expected at all, and I actually love that. I don’t want to reach a point where I decide this is who I am now and stop exploring.
We’re allowed to keep becoming.
We’re allowed to be beginners. We’re allowed to look ridiculous. We’re allowed to suddenly become fascinated by something completely unexpected and disappear down a rabbit hole learning everything about it. We’re allowed to change our style, our routines, our interests and the things that make us happy without needing some huge explanation for it.
There’s something really freeing about remembering that.
Because maybe finding yourself isn’t about uncovering one perfect, finished version of who you’re supposed to be. Maybe it’s about continuing to meet new versions of yourself for the rest of your life.
And I definitely don’t want the rest of mine to be beige.
I want colour. I want curiosity. I want ridiculous ideas that turn into brilliant memories. I want kitchen dancing and spontaneous adventures and moments where I think, fuck it, why not? I want to keep discovering things that make my eyes light up.
So if life has been feeling a little too predictable lately, you don’t necessarily need to burn everything down and start again.
Maybe you just need to turn the volume up.
Maybe you need to remember what makes you laugh, what makes you curious, what makes you lose track of time and what makes you feel properly, ridiculously alive.
And if your soul still isn’t dancing?
Change the fucking song. ✨🦊
