Tend to Yourself
4 October 2026Let Yourself Be a Beginner
There’s something strangely uncomfortable about being new at something. We’re so used to seeing everyone’s polished version that we forget there was once a time when they didn’t know what they were doing either. Nobody arrives with all the answers. Nobody starts at the finish line.
Yet somewhere along the way, we start expecting ourselves to be immediately good at everything we try. We pick up the paintbrush, step onto the yoga mat, open the book, start the business, explore a spiritual practice, learn a new skill, and if we’re not naturally brilliant straight away, that little voice creeps in:
Maybe this isn’t for me.
But what if you’re not bad at it?
What if you’re simply a beginner?
Being a beginner isn’t something to be embarrassed about. It’s actually a beautiful place to be. Everything is still waiting to be discovered. You’re allowed to ask questions. You’re allowed to change your mind. You’re allowed to get things completely wrong, laugh at yourself, learn something from it and have another go.
Think about everything you can do now without really thinking about it. There was once a first time for all of it. A first attempt. A wobble. A mistake. A moment where you wondered whether you’d ever get the hang of it. The person you are now was built through thousands of those tiny beginnings.
Sometimes we compare our beginning to somebody else’s middle. We see their confidence without seeing the years it took to build it. We see the finished creation without seeing everything that didn’t work along the way. We see someone standing comfortably in who they are without knowing how many times they questioned themselves before they got there.
Your first chapter isn’t supposed to look like somebody else’s chapter twenty.
And perhaps that’s where some of the magic lives. Not in already knowing, but in being curious enough to find out. In saying, I don’t know how to do this yet, but I’d quite like to learn.
You don’t need permission to enter a new space. You don’t have to prove you belong there before you’ve even begun. You certainly don’t need to wait until you feel completely ready, because sometimes confidence doesn’t arrive before the first step. Sometimes the first step is what creates it.
So try the thing.
Take the class. Read the book. Make the imperfect first attempt. Ask the question you think everyone else already knows the answer to. Let yourself wobble while you find your feet.
Be curious instead of critical.
Because every version of you that eventually became capable once stood exactly where you are now, not knowing how, but choosing to begin anyway.
Let yourself be a beginner.
There’s an entire world waiting on the other side of “I’ve never done this before.”
