The Version of You Nobody Clapped For
8 October 2026Trust What Feels Like Home
Have you ever met someone, walked into a place, started doing something new, or even stumbled across an idea and just thought, “Yep. This. I don’t know why, but this.” There’s no PowerPoint presentation from the universe. No little folder of supporting evidence. Your whole body just seems to recognise something before your brain has had time to get involved and start asking seventeen unnecessary questions.
I think we’re so used to needing reasons for everything that we forget we’re allowed to simply feel. We want proof that we’re making the right decision, reassurance that we’re on the right path, and preferably a large flashing sign saying THIS WAY, YOU ABSOLUTE TURNIP before we’re willing to trust ourselves. Meanwhile, our intuition has been quietly pointing in the same direction for the last six months wondering why we’re still holding a committee meeting about it.
And I’m not saying every warm fuzzy feeling is automatically a message from the universe. Sometimes a cosy blanket is just a really good cosy blanket. But there are certain things that carry a different kind of familiarity. A person you can completely relax around. A place where your shoulders drop without you even noticing. Something you start learning and immediately wonder where it’s been all your life. A version of yourself that feels less like becoming someone new and more like finally coming back to someone you recognise.
That’s what home means to me. It isn’t always four walls or somewhere you’ve lived for years. Home can be a person, a friendship, a practice, a community, a dream, a purpose, or simply a feeling inside yourself. Sometimes it’s the place where you don’t have to perform. You don’t have to shrink yourself, explain yourself, prove yourself or work ridiculously hard to earn your place there. You can just exist.
The difficult part is that what feels like home doesn’t always make immediate sense. Your head likes plans, evidence and approximately 46 backup plans in case the first 45 spontaneously combust. Your intuition is considerably less helpful. It tends to wander in, point at something and go, “That.” Then it leaves you to deal with the admin.
But I’m learning that I don’t need to understand every part of the road before I take the next step. I can pay attention to what brings that feeling of recognition. I can notice what makes me feel peaceful, alive, curious or completely myself. And I can also notice what repeatedly makes me feel like I’m trying to squeeze into somewhere I’ve already outgrown.
Maybe trusting what feels like home isn’t about blindly following every feeling. Maybe it’s simply about stopping long enough to listen when something inside you says, “I know this place.”
You don’t need the whole map today. Just notice which path makes something inside you soften.
And maybe trust yourself enough to take one step towards it.
