18 August 2026Your Ordinary Life Is Still Your Life
I think we can get so focused on the big things we want from life that we forget there’s actually a whole life happening while we’re waiting for them.
We have goals, plans and things we’re working towards. We imagine how life might look in a year, five years or even ten years. And there’s nothing wrong with that. I love having things to look forward to.
But I don’t want to spend all my time looking towards the next thing and completely miss what I’ve already got.
Most days aren’t going to be life changing.
Most days are going to be getting up, making breakfast, walking the dog, doing some work, sorting the house out, cooking something for tea and eventually climbing back into bed.
And actually, I think there’s something quite lovely about that.
I’ve started appreciating those ordinary little moments so much more. Having fresh bread in the kitchen. Sitting with a cup of tea when the house is quiet. Going for a walk and noticing that the seasons are starting to change. Putting music on while I’m pottering around the house. Having a random conversation that makes me laugh far more than it probably should.
None of those things are particularly exciting when you say them out loud.
But they’re my life.
I think that’s what romanticising your life means to me. It’s not pretending everything is beautiful or trying to make your life look like something from Pinterest.
It’s actually being present enough to notice it.
There will always be something else I’m working towards. I want Nova to grow. I want to experience new things. I want adventures. I have dreams for what I want my future to look like.
But I don’t want happiness to become something I’m constantly postponing until I get there.
Because what if this is one of the bits I’ll miss one day?
The quiet mornings. The familiar walks. The conversations in the kitchen. The stupid things that make me laugh. The little routines I don’t even think about because they’ve become so normal.
We’re always changing. Our homes change, our families change, people come and go, our routines change and eventually the life that feels completely ordinary today becomes something we remember.
That’s made me want to pay a bit more attention to mine.
Not every day needs to be productive. Not every day needs to have some huge purpose. And definitely not every day needs to be bloody magical.
Sometimes it’s enough to think, this is quite nice.
I still want the big life I’m building towards.
I just don’t want to miss the little life that’s happening while I build it.
Maybe that’s the real point of romanticising the ordinary.
Not making your life look more beautiful.
Actually noticing that some of it already is.
