The Fox & Crystal
Crystals have fascinated people for thousands of years — not just because they're bloody beautiful, but because of the meanings, stories and symbolism we've attached to them.
Here in The Fox & Crystal, you can explore some of my favourites, learn about the energies they're traditionally associated with, discover ways people use them within spiritual practice, and maybe find one that speaks to you.
I don't believe a crystal is going to magically fix your life for you. You're still the magic. For me, crystals are tools for intention, reflection and connection — little physical reminders of the energy we want to bring into our lives.
So have a wander through the cavern. See what catches your eye.
Sometimes we're drawn to something before we understand why.
Choosing a Crystal
Choosing a crystal doesn't need to be complicated, and you definitely don't need to know everything about crystals before you start.
Sometimes you might choose one because of what it's traditionally associated with. Maybe you're looking for a little more confidence, grounding, creativity, protection or self-love, and you want something physical to represent that intention.
Other times, you might find yourself repeatedly drawn to a particular colour, shape or stone without really knowing why. You keep picking it up, looking at it or coming back to it. You can explore its traditional symbolism afterwards and see whether any of it resonates with where you are in your life.
And sometimes?
You just think it's a really pretty rock.
That's completely valid too.
There isn't a right or wrong way to choose. You don't need to wait for a crystal to vibrate, become warm in your hand, flash dramatically under a full moon or send you a spiritual PowerPoint presentation. If those intuitive experiences are meaningful to you, beautiful. If they don't happen, that doesn't mean you've chosen the wrong crystal.
For me, choosing crystals is a mixture of intuition, curiosity and intention. I love learning about the meanings traditionally associated with them, but ultimately I pay attention to what a crystal represents to me and why I feel drawn to having it around.
You might choose a crystal based on what you're currently navigating, the energy you want to embody, something you'd like to be reminded of, or simply the one that makes you smile when you see it.
So explore. Pick things up. Learn their stories. Notice what catches your attention.
But don't worry too much about finding the perfect crystal.
Choose the one that feels like yours.
Cleansing & Caring for Your Crystals
Once you've chosen your crystals, you might want to cleanse them as part of your spiritual practice. For me, cleansing isn't about a crystal being dirty or suddenly becoming full of bad energy. It's more like a little reset — a moment to reconnect with it, clear the intention I've previously attached to it and decide what I want it to represent moving forward.
There are loads of ways people spiritually cleanse crystals. You can use sound, such as a singing bowl or bells; pass them carefully through incense or herb smoke; place them somewhere they'll receive moonlight; use another crystal traditionally associated with cleansing, such as selenite; or simply hold your crystal and use visualisation and intention.
You don't need an elaborate ritual either. Sometimes I simply hold mine, take a moment to settle myself and set an intention. Your practice doesn't become more meaningful because you've made it complicated.
A Little Warning About Water, Salt & Sunlight
This bit is important: not every crystal can be physically treated in the same way.
You'll often see advice online telling you to cleanse crystals by soaking them in water, burying them in salt or leaving them in strong sunlight. While those methods may be suitable for certain stones, they can damage others. Some minerals can dissolve, rust, become brittle, lose their polish or fade in prolonged sunlight.
So before putting an unfamiliar crystal in water, salt or direct sunlight, check the care requirements for that specific mineral first. And don't make crystal-infused drinking water by dropping unknown stones directly into it — some minerals can contain substances you don't want leaching into something you're going to drink.
If you're unsure, sound and intention are lovely no-contact options that don't require exposing the crystal to water, salt, smoke or strong sunlight.
Everyday Crystal Care
Crystals might feel magical, but physically they're still minerals — and some are much tougher than others. Keep delicate pieces somewhere they won't be knocked around, avoid throwing softer stones into a bag with harder ones, and store jewellery carefully so chains and settings aren't damaged.
For ordinary dust or fingerprints, start gently with a soft, dry cloth. Before using water or cleaning products, check what is safe for that particular stone and any metal, glue or setting attached to it.
And if your crystal gets chipped, scratched or broken? It doesn't mean you've attracted something terrible or that the crystal has heroically sacrificed itself to save you. Sometimes...
you've just dropped a rock.
You can still decide whether the broken piece has meaning for you, keep it, repurpose it or simply let it go.
However you choose to cleanse and care for your collection, make it something that feels good within your practice. There's no Crystal Police coming to inspect whether you charged your amethyst under the correct phase of the moon.
Treat your crystals with care, learn about the individual stones you own, and most importantly...
Enjoy them. They're bloody beautiful.
A little note from the Fox
Crystal meanings come from spiritual, cultural and modern metaphysical traditions and aren't scientifically proven healing effects. Enjoy them as part of your spiritual or wellbeing practice, but never use crystals instead of appropriate medical or professional support.
The cavern is still growing...
I'll keep adding new crystals as I discover, learn about and work with them, so come back and see what's appeared in The Fox & Crystal.
