Who Are You When Nobody Needs You?

Joy Is Part of Healing Too
8 September 2026Make Your Life Somewhere You Actually Want to Be
I think a lot of us are guilty of living in the when.
I’ll be happier when I’ve got more money. I’ll do that when I’ve lost weight. I’ll wear that when I’ve got somewhere nice to go. I’ll start enjoying myself when life calms down. I’ll focus on myself when everyone else is sorted.
And somehow there’s always another bloody when waiting behind it.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting more for yourself. I actually think having things to look forward to and dreams you’re working towards is really important. But I’ve realised there’s a massive difference between looking forward to your future and accidentally waiting for your future before you let yourself properly live.
Because most of life isn’t made up of the massive moments.
It’s random Monday mornings. It’s making tea. It’s wandering around Home Bargains and coming home with something you absolutely did not go in for. It’s putting music on while you clean. It’s laughing until your stomach hurts over something completely stupid. It’s sitting in your pyjamas at 2pm because you’ve decided you’re not going anywhere. It’s all the little bits in between the things we think are supposed to matter.
And I think those bits deserve some effort too.
You don’t need to completely reinvent your life. You don’t need a massive house, loads of money or some perfectly curated morning routine where you wake up at 5am, drink something green and somehow look delighted about it.
Sometimes making your life nicer is literally just using the bloody thing you’ve been saving.
Light the nice candle. Put the good bedding on. Wear the outfit even though you’re only going for coffee. Buy yourself the flowers. Move your furniture around because you fancy a change. Start the hobby you’ve been talking about for six months. Go somewhere just because you want to see it.
Make the nice dinner on a Wednesday.
Life doesn’t only happen on birthdays, holidays and special occasions.
And it’s not just about making your surroundings pretty either. It’s about paying attention to how your life actually feels.
Who do you feel relaxed around? What makes you laugh? What leaves you absolutely drained? What parts of your routine do you secretly hate but keep doing because you think you’re supposed to? When do you feel most like yourself?
We spend so much time thinking about what a good life is supposed to look like that sometimes we forget to ask whether we actually bloody like it.
Your version of a lovely life might make absolutely no sense to somebody else.
Good.
They don’t have to live it.
You’re still allowed to want the big things. You can want the new house, different career, more money, healthier relationships, adventures, healing, whatever it is you’re working towards. This isn’t about pretending everything is wonderful when it isn’t or forcing yourself to be grateful for things that genuinely need to change.
It’s about not making happiness the prize you get at the end.
You’re allowed some now.
You’re allowed to create little pockets of the life you want while you’re still building the bigger picture. In fact, I think that’s probably how we create it in the first place. One choice, one boundary, one ridiculous purchase, one new experience and one ordinary lovely day at a time.
So yes, make plans. Dream big. Change things. Decide you want something completely different and go after it.
But don’t forget to live while you’re getting there.
Your life isn’t waiting somewhere in the future for you to finally catch up with it.
This is it too.
So maybe instead of asking yourself what your dream life looks like, ask something a little simpler:
What would make my life feel a little more like mine today?
Then start there.
