You Don’t Have to Fix Someone to Support Them

Make Your Life Somewhere You Actually Want to Be
7 September 2026It’s strange how easy it is to become a collection of roles without even noticing it.
Mum. Partner. Friend. Daughter. The strong one. The listener. The person who sorts things out. The one people ring when everything has gone spectacularly tits up because apparently somewhere along the way you became the emergency services.
And there’s nothing wrong with caring for people. There’s nothing wrong with loving deeply, showing up, helping, supporting or being someone’s safe place. Those can be some of the most beautiful parts of who we are.
But they aren’t all of who we are.
Sometimes we spend so long being needed that we forget what it feels like to simply exist without having a job to do.
And then, when life finally goes quiet, it can feel bloody uncomfortable.
Because who are you when nobody needs feeding, fixing, reassuring, organising, rescuing or checking on?
What do you actually like?
Not what’s useful. Not what makes somebody else happy. Not what fits neatly around everyone else’s life. What makes you curious? What makes you completely lose track of time? What makes something inside you wake up and go, there you are.
I think we can accidentally start measuring our worth by how useful we are to other people. If I’m helping, I have purpose. If somebody needs me, I matter. If I can make things better, I’m doing enough.
But your worth was never supposed to be something you earned through exhaustion.
You are still worthy when the washing is sitting there giving you evils. You are still worthy when you say no. You are still worthy when somebody has a problem you cannot solve. You are still worthy when you spend an afternoon doing something completely pointless simply because it makes you happy.
You are allowed to have an identity that belongs entirely to you.
Maybe you don’t even know what that looks like anymore. That’s okay. You don’t need to immediately disappear into the woods for three months and emerge with a new name and a suspicious number of crystals. Although, obviously, I support the general vibe. 😂
Start smaller.
Put music on that you love. Pick up something you stopped doing years ago. Read about something completely random because it interests you. Make something badly. Go somewhere because you want to see it. Sit quietly and notice what your mind wanders towards when nobody else is asking anything of you.
Get curious about yourself again.
Because underneath every title you carry, every responsibility you hold and every person you love, there is still a whole human being in there.
Not a fixer.
Not a carer.
Not a role.
Not a responsibility.
Just you.
And you don’t have to prove that version of yourself deserves to exist.
You already do.
So perhaps today isn’t about becoming somebody new at all.
Perhaps it’s about remembering the person who was there underneath everything else.
Still here. Still you. Always enough.
