Notice Who Celebrates Your Joy
9 September 2026Joy Is Part of Healing Too
I think sometimes we get so caught up in healing that we forget we’re actually supposed to be enjoying our lives as well.
There’s always something else to work on, isn’t there? Another pattern to break, another trigger to understand, another boundary to put in place, another part of ourselves we’re apparently supposed to fix. And before you know it, healing has somehow turned into another full-time bloody job.
But I don’t think joy is something we get as a prize once we’ve finally sorted ourselves out. I think joy is part of how we find ourselves again in the first place.
You can still have things you’re working through and have an amazing day. You can be carrying something heavy and still laugh until your stomach hurts five minutes later. One doesn’t cancel out the other.
And actually, I think there’s something really lovely about getting to the point where you start being a bit ridiculous again. You start laughing more. You get excited over stupid little things. You dance around the kitchen, wear something purely because it makes you feel good, sing badly, create things just because you want to. You start doing things that have absolutely no deeper meaning whatsoever other than they make you happy.
Not everything needs to be turned into a lesson.
Sometimes you don’t need to journal about it, meditate on it, analyse why you feel it or find the deeper meaning from the universe.
Sometimes you just need to have a bloody good time.
I’ve started realising that healing isn’t about reaching some magical point where nothing ever hurts again. Life is still going to happen. There will still be difficult days, things that piss us off, things that hurt and things we have to work through.
The difference is that those things don’t get to have all of us anymore.
There’s room for other things now.
There’s room for laughter and excitement. There’s room for silliness and creativity. There’s room for the people who make us feel good. There’s room for random little moments that make absolutely no sense to anybody else but somehow make our whole day.
And I think that matters just as much as all the serious healing work.
Because the whole point of healing was never to become really good at healing.
It was to get back to living.
So do something today simply because it makes you happy. It doesn’t need to be productive. It doesn’t need to improve you. It doesn’t need to make sense to anyone else.
You don’t need to earn joy.
You’re allowed to have it now.
Joy is part of healing too.
