10 September 2026Notice Who Celebrates Your Joy
We talk a lot about noticing who shows up when things go wrong. Who checks in when you’re struggling, who sits with you when life feels heavy, who answers the phone when everything has gone a bit tits up. And obviously, those people matter. A lot.
But I think there’s another side of friendship and connection that we don’t talk about nearly enough.
Notice who celebrates your joy.
Notice who you can tell good news to without feeling like you need to play it down first. The people who get genuinely excited for you, even when what you’re excited about might seem tiny to somebody else. The ones who don’t immediately compare it to something they’ve done, change the subject or somehow manage to take the shine off it.
Because being there for someone isn’t only about holding their hand through the shit bits. Sometimes it’s about clapping ridiculously loudly when something finally goes right for them.
And I think we all know that feeling when something good happens and there’s a particular person you immediately want to tell. You already know they’re going to understand why it matters. They’re going to be excited because you’re excited. There’s something really lovely about that.
It doesn’t even have to be massive news. Maybe you finally did something you’d been putting off. Maybe somebody complimented you. Maybe your plant grew a new leaf and apparently this is now the most exciting event of the week. The actual thing doesn’t really matter. What matters is having people around you who don’t make you feel silly for finding joy in it.
I think that’s something worth paying attention to.
Not so we can start keeping score of who clapped loudly enough or mentally chucking people in the bin because they didn’t use enough exclamation marks. That’s not what this is about. It’s about noticing the people who naturally make space for your happiness.
And while we’re noticing them, maybe there’s another question worth asking too.
Are we that person for other people?
When somebody tells us something wonderful, do we let them have their moment? Do we celebrate without comparing? Can we be genuinely happy for somebody else’s success even when we’re still waiting for our own?
Because somebody else’s light doesn’t make ours any dimmer.
I want the people I love to feel like they can come running to me with the ridiculous, wonderful, tiny, enormous things. I want them to know I’ll make room for their joy just as readily as I’d make room for their sadness.
So today, notice your people.
The ones who smile when you smile. The ones who hype you up. The ones who remember what you’ve been working towards and ask how it went. The ones who make your happiness feel safe instead of something you need to shrink.
Those people are precious.
And if you’ve got them, celebrate them too.
