Rest Is Part of the Rhythm
24 September 2026Put Your Energy Where Your Future Lives
We talk a lot about protecting our energy, but sometimes I think we forget that protecting it is only half the job. The other half is deciding where we actually want to put it.
Because energy is a bit like money. You can be really careful about not wasting it, then suddenly realise you’ve somehow spent the entire budget on something you didn’t even want. Except instead of checking your bank account and wondering why you apparently needed four trips to Home Bargains, you’re lying in bed replaying a conversation from three days ago.
Same chaos. Different currency.
It’s so easy to give our energy to things that have absolutely nothing to do with where we’re going. We worry about what somebody thinks of us. We revisit things we can’t change. We get dragged into situations that don’t deserve nearly as much attention as we’re giving them.
Meanwhile, the things we genuinely want to grow are sitting quietly in the corner going, Hello? Remember me?
I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. If I know what I want to build, why would I keep giving the best parts of me to things that aren’t part of it? That doesn’t mean pretending problems don’t exist or floating around in a cloud of incense refusing to acknowledge reality. Although, to be fair, the incense does make everything smell considerably nicer.
It just means learning that not everything deserves the same amount of access to you.
Your future needs your energy too. The things you want to build, the relationships you want to nurture, the things you want to learn, the person you’re becoming, and those little ideas that keep tapping you on the shoulder asking to be explored. They need time and attention, especially when they’re still tiny and nobody else can quite see what you can see yet.
Sometimes that means noticing where your energy has been going and gently calling it back. Not with guilt. Not with another excuse to have a go at yourself. Just a little, “Right then, we’ve spent quite enough time over there.”
You’re allowed to redirect yourself.
You’re allowed to stop watering things simply because you’ve watered them for a long time. You’re allowed to decide that something which once deserved your attention doesn’t anymore.
So today, have a look at what you’re feeding. Not just with your actions, but with your thoughts, your attention and your emotions.
Ask yourself: does this belong where I’m going?
Because your energy is precious, and your future deserves more than whatever happens to be left over.
