I Honour What My Body Is Asking For
2 October 2026Be the Energy You Want in the Room
Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt the mood before anyone’s even said anything? Sometimes it’s warm and easy, everyone’s laughing and you instantly relax. Other times you walk in and think, Christ, what’s happened in here then? Energy spreads, and it’s ridiculously easy to get swept up in whatever is already happening around us.
Something I’m learning, though, is that I don’t have to automatically become whatever energy I’ve walked into. If someone’s angry, I don’t have to become angry with them. If someone’s miserable, I don’t have to climb into the misery pit and pull the lid over us both. And if something happens that threatens to completely change the atmosphere, I don’t always have to give it my attention. I can choose what I bring instead.
Sometimes that might be calm. Sometimes compassion. Sometimes it might be sitting quietly beside someone because they don’t need advice, they just need someone there. And sometimes, quite frankly, it might be dancing around like an absolute tit until somebody laughs. There’s something quite powerful about realising we can shift the energy simply by deciding what we’re going to add to it.
We spend so much time thinking about protecting our energy from other people that sometimes we forget we contribute energy everywhere we go too. We can walk into a room and make somebody feel welcome. We can notice the person who’s gone quiet. We can celebrate someone without making their happiness about us. We can refuse to join in with negativity. We can bring softness into a difficult conversation, laughter into a heavy moment, or a bit of silliness into a day that’s taking itself far too seriously.
That doesn’t mean pretending everything is wonderful when it isn’t. Being the energy you want in the room isn’t about forcing positivity or plastering a smile over difficult feelings. Some rooms need honesty. Some need tears. Some need someone brave enough to say, “Actually, this isn’t okay.” It’s not about being cheerful all the bloody time. It’s about being intentional with what you bring.
I’m realising more and more that I don’t control what mood somebody arrives in, what they say, what they think of me or what choices they make. But I do get a say in what I add to the situation. Instead of automatically reacting to whatever is happening around me, I can ask myself, what energy do I actually want to bring into this?
And I think there’s a kind of magic in that. You don’t have to wait for somebody else to create the atmosphere you want to exist in. Bring it with you. Bring the kindness, the laughter, the honesty, the weirdness, the warmth and, when required, the ridiculous dancing.
Whatever you wish there was a little more of in the world, start by putting a little more of it into the spaces you occupy.
