I’m Building a Life That Feels Like Mine
10 October 2026Same lesson, different outfit
There’s something almost insulting about how the universe will remove something from your life, give you a bit of peace, let you think you’ve finally learned the lesson… and then send it back wearing a completely different outfit.
Different person. Different situation. Different circumstances. Same bloody pattern.
And the annoying part is, sometimes you don’t notice straight away. At first you’re thinking, “No, no, this is completely different.” Then a little while later you’re sat there squinting at it like, hang on a minute… haven’t we already done this episode?
I think that’s part of growth though. Not becoming so enlightened that nothing ever catches you out again, because frankly that sounds exhausting. It’s recognising things quicker. Spotting the familiar feeling sooner. Realising when you’re making excuses for something you’ve already outgrown.
Sometimes we hold on because we think walking away means we’ve failed. We tell ourselves to be patient, understanding, flexible, give it another chance. And sometimes that’s right. But sometimes we’re just repainting the same red flag and calling it decor.
There are things that keep leaving because they’re not meant to come with us. People, habits, situations, old versions of ourselves. And every time we try to drag them forward, the universe seems to gently, and occasionally not very gently, prise our fingers off them.
The lesson isn’t always “try harder.”
Sometimes the lesson is “you already know how this ends.”
And I think there’s something really powerful in reaching the point where you don’t need the full disaster anymore. You don’t need three months, seventeen conversations, a breakdown, a playlist and a dramatic stare out of a rainy window to understand what’s happening.
You just recognise it.
You look at it and think, “Yep. Same lesson. Different outfit.”
And this time, you choose differently.
