Freedom Can Feel Empty Before It Feels Free
12 October 2026I’m Building a Life That Feels Like Mine
There comes a point where you realise you’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to build a life that makes sense to everyone else.
You do what you’re supposed to do, tick the boxes, keep the peace, make yourself useful, try not to disappoint anyone, and somehow still end up sitting there thinking… is this actually what I want?
Because there’s a big difference between a life that looks fine from the outside and a life that actually feels right when you’re the one living in it.
I think a lot of us get so used to adapting that we forget we’re allowed to choose. We get used to squeezing ourselves into routines, expectations, relationships, jobs, versions of ourselves, all because they’re familiar. And familiar can be very convincing. It turns up wearing slippers and says, “well, this’ll do.”
But “this’ll do” is not exactly the same thing as joy, is it?
Building a life that feels like yours does not always mean burning everything to the ground and moving into a cottage in the woods with twelve crystals and a suspicious amount of herbs. Although, personally, I’m not ruling that out.
Sometimes it’s smaller than that.
It’s choosing what actually matters to you. Saying no without writing a full legal defence afterwards. Trying something new because it lights something up in you. Spending time with people who feel good to be around. Letting yourself change your mind. Letting yourself want different things now than you wanted five years ago.
It’s noticing the little moments where you think, this feels like me.
That matters.
Because your life is not meant to be one long performance where everybody else gets a vote and you somehow end up as an unpaid extra in your own bloody story.
You’re allowed to build something that fits you.
Not one you settled for. Not one designed around who other people wanted you to be. Not one held together by obligation, habit and “well, I’ve always done it this way.”
One that feels true.
And you do not have to have the whole thing figured out. You just keep choosing the next thing that feels more aligned, more peaceful, more exciting, more yours.
Bit by bit, that becomes a life.
So today, ask yourself this…
What’s one part of your life that feels more like you now than it did a year ago?
And if the answer is “absolutely nothing, I’m currently held together by caffeine and spite,” fair enough
Start with one thing.
That’s still building.
