I’m Building a Life That Feels Like Mine
10 October 2026Freedom Can Feel Empty Before It Feels Free
Nobody really tells you that freedom can feel a bit weird at first. You expect this huge cinematic moment where the clouds part, the music swells, and suddenly you feel lighter than air. In reality, sometimes you just sit there thinking, “Right then… what the hell do I do now?” Because when something has taken up a massive amount of space in your life, even if it was stressful, draining, complicated or just plain exhausting, you get used to it being there.
You get used to thinking about it, dealing with it, working around it, preparing for it and recovering from it. It becomes part of the furniture, even if it’s the ugly chair nobody actually likes. Then one day it’s gone, and instead of instantly feeling free, you notice the space it left behind. That can feel uncomfortable because we are so used to filling every gap with noise, jobs, distractions or some fresh little crisis to keep ourselves occupied.
Sometimes we even drag old situations back into our lives simply because familiar chaos feels less scary than unfamiliar peace. Which is a ridiculous little trick the brain likes to play. “Yes, this was terrible, but at least I knew where everything was.” Freedom can feel empty because suddenly there is nothing demanding your attention in the same way. No fire to put out, no situation to manage, no seventeen mental tabs open in the background like your brain has somehow become a laptop from 2007 and that quiet can make you wonder if something is missing. Sometimes something is missing. The thing that was exhausting you. That is the bit we forget. Not every empty space needs filling immediately.
Sometimes the whole point is to leave it empty for a while, let yourself breathe in it, and work out what you actually want there next instead of panic-filling the gap because the silence made you itchy.
There is a difference between emptiness and space. Emptiness feels like something should be there. Space asks you what you would like to create. Maybe that is where freedom actually begins, not in the dramatic ending, but in the slightly awkward bit afterwards where you realise nobody is handing you a script anymore.
You get to choose what happens next. Which is exciting, mildly terrifying, and a bit like being handed the keys to somewhere you have never lived before. You might stand in the doorway for a while before you start decorating. That does not mean you want the old place back. It just means this one is finally yours.
