What If Nothing Needs Fixing Today?
1 September 2026It’s so easy to look around and convince yourself that everyone else is somehow further ahead. Someone has the career, someone has the relationship, someone bought the house, started the business, found themselves, healed their trauma and apparently remembered to drink two litres of water while doing it.
Meanwhile, you’re sitting there wondering whether you’ve somehow missed a deadline nobody told you about.
You haven’t.
We’ve somehow created this idea that life should happen in a particular order and by particular ages. By now you should have done this. By now you should know that. By now you should have figured yourself out.
According to who?
Life isn’t a checklist. Some people discover what they want at twenty. Others completely reinvent themselves at forty, sixty or eighty. Some people take enormous leaps while others move quietly, one tiny decision at a time. Neither is more valid, and your life isn’t late simply because it doesn’t look like somebody else’s.
The thing is, growth doesn’t always look particularly impressive from the outside either. Sometimes it looks like resting. Saying no. Changing your mind. Walking away from something you once thought you wanted. Spending time figuring out who you actually are instead of continuing to become whoever everyone else expected you to be.
There will be seasons where everything seems to move quickly and others where almost nothing appears to be happening. That doesn’t mean nothing is changing. Roots grow in darkness. Not everything meaningful needs to be visible.
Comparison makes all of this so much harder because we rarely compare like with like. We compare somebody else’s visible achievements with our private struggles. We see their announcement, their success, their relationship or their new beginning. We don’t see every rejection, breakdown, sleepless night, wrong turn or moment they wondered what the hell they were doing.
And even if their journey genuinely has been easier, it still has absolutely nothing to do with the timing of yours.
Healing takes time. Building something meaningful takes time. Learning to trust yourself takes time. Becoming comfortable with the person you’re growing into takes time. Constantly shouting at yourself to hurry the fuck up doesn’t make any of those things happen faster.
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is stop fighting your own pace.
Maybe you aren’t where you thought you’d be by now. That doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Look at everything you’ve survived, learned, released, rebuilt and understood along the way. There are versions of you from years ago who probably wouldn’t recognise the person you’re becoming now.
So no, you’re not behind.
You’re not late. You haven’t missed your moment. You are still growing, still learning, still changing and still becoming.
You’re simply unfolding in your own time.
And perhaps you were never supposed to bloom according to somebody else’s calendar anyway.
